Chattooga River Rapids In Winter Mist

In late winter, when the landscape isn’t yet vibrant green, a black and white treatment brings out the character of these Chattooga River rapids.

This image is from one of my favorite places in North Carolina: a small set of rapids along the Chattooga River, near Cashiers. I visited right in the transition between winter and spring. The air was warming, but the rivers were still frigid, leading to beautiful mist near the water. The trees were still leafless, but the dense thicket near the river’s shores was mostly rhododendron, which never fully lose their leaves. This allowed me to go for a lush-looking landscape, with the atmospherics that only come in winter.
