Unstoppable Force – Appalachian Mountain Stream
This photograph of a remote Appalachian mountain stream shows one of nature's most unstoppable forces: erosion. It's a slow force, but time is on its side. In fact, this force is everywhere one looks in the Appalachian Mountains. They are the oldest mountains on earth, and at one point were the highest as well. Millions of years ago, they were taller than the Himalayas of today. But time has worn them down to gentle rolling peaks they are now. Even though they are made predominantly of very hard granite, the rocks and peaks and cliffs have all been blunted by the never-ending flow of water down these mountainsides.
