Sweetwater Slough – Big Cypress Preserve

In the depths of South Florida's Big Cypress Preserve (which is right next to, and part of the same ecosystem as, the Everglades), small sloughs are littered throughout the landscape. These sloughs are typically depressions in the bedrock that become major flow channels in the wet season. When the water level rises, they take on the appearance of small creeks or even rivers. This is Sweetwater Slough, flanked on both sides by beautiful cypress trees adorned with ferns and epiphytes. I love photos of this type of Big Cypress Landscape. They are like a game of hidden pictures – when you look longer, you see more and more.
