Jungle Road in Florida Outback
Nature is at its most indomitable in remote South Florida. Sometimes it seems like mere weeks is all it takes for the vines, epiphytes, and strangler figs to start choking even the most manicured of landscapes. This scene of a wild jungle road cutting through a hardwood hammock illustrates this reality perfectly. While not that remote in the grand scheme of things, nature is thriving here, resisting all attempts to tame it. The high biodiversity of South Florida's subtropical jungles is on prime display in hammocks like this. A great many species of plants are visible in just a small frame. Unseen in this photo is the high biodiversity of insect life in the hammock – but I promise it was there, harassing me every step of the way.
