The beautiful small town of Hvammstangi, Iceland, on a clear March day at sunset.

This lovely sunset was unfortunately the only clear sunset that I got to witness in Iceland during my 8 day stay. It's okay, I got to see the Northern Lights twice, so I consider that a fair trade. And if I had to pick a night to have a great sunset, this might have been it. The town of Hvammstangi, with its small but beautiful waterfront, was the perfect setting to setup the tripod and soak it in. FYI, this image is the exact same image as my photograph "Hvammstangi Harbor at Sunset", just cropped differently. I figured that some buyers might prefer this aspect ratio over the original one.

The waterfront of Hvammstangi's harbor lights up opposite the setting sun, on Iceland's north coast.

This is the single lone sunset photograph I got from my trip to Iceland. When they say that March is the month with the most precipitation, they mean it. There are are plenty of perks to visiting Iceland in March. For instance, the twelve hours of daylight but still a chance to see the Northern Lights. But I didn't get many sunsets. I tried hard to appreciate this one, but it was difficult. The tiny coastal village of Hvammstangi looked truly beautiful as it basked in the glow of the clear sunset, but I could barely concentrate. While I tried to soak in the beautiful moment, my mind was instead focused on the great chance of seeing the Aurora that this clear evening would provide.

The Very Large Array, or VLA, shown here at sunset, is a large radio-wave telescope outside of Socorro, New Mexico.

The Very Large Array (VLA) is located pretty much in the middle of nowhere. The nearest town is Socorro, New Mexico, but it is tiny, and fifty miles away. But the remote desert is the perfect place for radio telescopes such as this. The dry atmosphere leads to stronger extraterrestrial signals due reduced water vapor interference. It also makes the nights eerily lonely, a feeling only amplified by these giant instruments probing the depths of space. The VLA at sunset, and the surrounding landscape in general, comes to stunning life... but minutes from now a piercing darkness will take over, as if to encourage contemplation of the beyond.

Gentle waves rinse over the small sea shells on St. Augustine Beach, Florida, at sunrise.

As I mentioned in the description of another photograph from this morning, the simplicity of the sunrise forced me to focus on other senses besides vision. Usually, when watching sunrise from a beach, the second-most salient sense would be hearing. When you are on the beach without all the crowds, you hear so many noises you usually can't. The main one which comes to mind is the tossing and turning of the shells in the waves. It's hard to describe, but most of you probably know what I'm talking about. Well on this morning, as I searched my senses, I noticed that even that noise was barely audible. The waves were so gentle, and spread out over such a long flat beach, that the shells weren't moving much. Instead, the thin layer of water would create small wakes over the shells. And these aren't large shells entrenched deeply in the sand -- these are small coquina clams! It was mesmerizing to watch the water patterns over the small shells repeat themselves over and over, reversing direction as the waves came in and out.

A beautiful sunset over the Pacific Ocean is reflected perfectly by wet sand, in Costa Rica's Manuel Antonio National Park.

To me, this photograph from Manuel Antonio National Park simultaneously conveys a sense of action and a sense of tranquility at the same time. The motion of the small wave, as well as the many clouds, give the sense of a world in motion. The reflection of the beautiful Costa Rica sunset, on the other hand, seems to freeze the world in place. The irony is that the reflection was the most fleeting part of this scene, even moreso than the wave. The shimmery film of water only existed for a brief moment between the suds dispersing and the water sinking into the sand. That is what I love about photography. Instead of merely documenting of reality, the artist can tweak it to show the most instantaneous, unexpected moments.
