Moored sailboats frame a peaceful sunset outside of Crandon Marina, on Key Biscayne,
Florida

To me, few views are more peaceful than this one. This view is looking over Biscayne Bay, from Key Biscayne, Florida. My opinion probably has a lot to do with personal sentimentality. My extended family jointly owns a boat which is parked at this marina, and this is the view we always get after a nice evening sail. The peace and tranquility are therefore more than just visual. A few hours of wind on the face and salt in the hair does a lot to calm the soul. The alcohol which often accompanies the journey doesn't hurt either. However, beyond my own personal attachment to this vista, I imagine the themes of sailboats, calm water, and a beautiful sunset hold a fairly universal appeal to the human spirit.

This photo barely needs a description at all. I took this photograph while sailing in the Florida Keys - one of the greatest places to sail on earth. The wind is usually good, the waters are warm and gentle, and there are amazing reefs and safe anchorages the whole way. Like anywhere in South Florida, storms can sometimes be an issue in summer, but often they are considerate enough to hover just off the shoreline and not pose any real threat. I've spent time sailing on the west coast of the country, and it's not the same. Nothing beats cruising under sail in the Florida Keys.

Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida

You haven't seen Miami unless you've seen it from the water. The nightlife is world renowned, but it gets tiresome eventually (for me at least). Sailing Biscayne Bay, however, never gets old. The turquoise tropical waters, the wind on your face, the salt in your hair... THAT is the way to see Miami. Being out on the water is important to a great many of the locals here in Miami, but sailing is actually less popular than I would think. The city seems to prefer motor boating. I find this odd, because of all the places I've lived South Florida is the most perfect for sailing.

Voyage Into Fantasy – Rovinj, Croatia

As the historically-themed sailing vessel crept into view, Rovinj (Croatia) took on an air of pure fantasy.

Along the Adriatic coast, the little town of Rovinj, Croatia, embodies the feeling of romance. As beautiful as it is by day, dusk pushes this village into a whole new realm. The modest lighting of a handful of ancient dwellings, which crowd the small hill from crest to coastline, dances off the water in a way that evokes thoughts of a time when candlelight was all we knew. Then, as if sensing that the scene was not yet complete, the historically-styled sailboat silently glided into view, turning my awe into pure fantasy. The whole scene was so cohesively archaic that I almost forgot I lived in modern times!
